On 21st April 2015 Google rolled out an update for Google mobile search in the market it named as mobilegeddon mostly.
What is Mobile search update?
Before this update of search Giant Google does not counts Responsive web as rankings factor for organic results of serach after this new update rolling out,They consider it as one of the ranking factors also to get top rank in SERP.
It means now Google wants your websites to be responsive sites that works same as Desktop and also perfectly viewable in Mobiles o it consider as Mobile-Friendly.
What Google says about this?
As we mentioned in this particular change, you either have a mobile friendly page or not. It is based on the criteria we mentioned earlier, which are small font sizes, your tap targets/links to your buttons are too close together, readable content and your viewpoint. So if you have all of those and your site is mobile friendly then you benefit from the ranking change.
But as we mentioned earlier, there are over 200 different factors that determine ranking so we can’t just give you a yes or no answer with this. It depends on all the other attributes of your site, weather it is providing a great user experience or not. That is the same with desktop search, not isolated with mobile search.
How do I check whether my website is Mobile Friendly Or Not?
Google provided the solution to check if your web pages are Mobile Friendly or not, You can check using this Google Mobile friendly test tool.

You can check using GWT (Webmaster tool of Google) of Mobile Usability report in Webmaster Tools it shows all detailed report of your website.

Are Google Desktop results are different from Google Mobile?
Yes, Obviously with this new update it differentiates the sites which are Mobile friendly gives top rankings rather than just Desktop friendly sites only.
It shows small mention at results which are mobile friendly or not at SERP.
How can I track my rankings of Google Mobile search?
Due to this major update by serach Giant we must consider this is serious to track the efforts of our web sites on the mobile searches with desktop search also.
